The FDA recently announced a food recall on Sunflower Kernels that could cause possible health risk due to contamination of Listeria Monocytogene. Listeria Monocytogene is a pathogenic bacterium that causes the infection Listeriosis. Listeriosis is the third-leading cause of death among foodborne bacterial pathogens. Listeria monocytogenes is commonly found in soil and water. Animals can carry the bacterium without appearing ill and can contaminate foods of animal origin, such as meats and dairy products. Listeria monocytogenes can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems. Listeria monocytogenes infection can cause miscarriages and stillbirths among pregnant women. Symptoms usually consist of fever and muscle aches, sometimes preceded by diarrhea or other gastrointestinal symptoms.
Three food product companies’ recalled some food products that contained Listeria Monocytogenes. Hy-Vee located in Iowa voluntarily recalled six trail mix products across its eight-state region due to possible contamination in: Hy-Vee Caramel Cashew Honey Crunch Trail Mix, Hy-Vee Dark Chocolate Cranberry Trail Mix, Hy-Vee Mountain Trail Mix, Hy-Vee Mountain Trail Mix To Go, Hy-Vee Berry Trail Mix, Hy-Vee Santa Fe Trail Mix. In Arizona, Papa John’s Salad and Produce, Inc. is voluntarily recalling Oriental Salad with Sesame Ginger Dressing due to possible Listeria monocytogenes contamination as well as Dakota Style Foods, Inc. of Clark in South Dakota, has expanded its voluntary recall to include 15,158 cases of sunflower kernels because it has the potential to be contaminated. The potential for contamination was discovered after SunOpta, announced they were recalling specific lots of sunflower kernels due to the potential for Listeria Monocytogenes.
